Create a practice of beauty, with a 30 day challenge. Last March, I invited participants to practice beauty each day together, and we charted our experiences on Instagram through #practicebeauty. I sent weekly letters with prompts, thoughts, and encouragement about the concept of beauty and how we can practice it, and how just a few minutes of a day focused on beauty can change the rest of the day—and the rest of the world.

Because let’s be honest, friends: it’s an ugly world out there. We really need beauty not just to survive it, but to continue making the world a better place, for all of us.

What does it mean to create a beauty practice? Practicing beauty can happen in three ways: noticing, making, or sharing. A daily commitment to noticing beauty, or making beauty, or sharing beauty—or all three—is practicing beauty. It’s a conscious shift in focus, in attention, to the beautiful. Maybe that’s making paintings, or noticing beauty on a walk through the woods. Maybe it’s making a meal for your family and taking a minute to light candles and set the table. There are so many ways to create beauty, to take time to notice beauty, and to share it with others. You don’t have to be an artist to bring beauty into the world. In fact, we need all of us to practice beauty.

I believe cultivating a conscious choice to notice the beauty around us, to reconnecting to the enjoyment of making beauty, and the joy of sharing beauty—these practices can make this world a better place, for you and for those around you. I’ve been consciously practicing beauty myself, and I’d like to take you on a journey to practicing beauty with me.
